ELISE HOWARD

Guest: Former Editorial Director

Algonquin Young Readers

Elise Howard, Editor, Algonquin Young ReadersBefore joining Algonquin, Elise was senior vice president and associate publisher at HarperCollins Children’s Books. She joined Workman Publishing in 2011 as the founding editor and publisher of Algonquin Young Readers (AYR). Her aim has been to build a home for books of enduring quality distinguished by superlative writing, moving stories, and memorable characters across many genres, including novels, graphic novels, and picture books.

Among the Algonquin books Elise has edited is The Girl Who Drank the Moon (about the power of generosity and love—and how a community suffers when they disappear), by Kelly Barnhill, 2017 winner of the Newbery Medal. Under Elise's direction, AYR books have won Lambda, Edgar Allan Poe, Rainbow List, Bank Street, Horn Book Fanfare, Kirkus, SLJ, Booklist, Publishers Weekly and many other Best of the Year awards.

Though Elise has recently stepped down from her AYR publisher’s post, she’ll continue to do limited editorial projects for the imprint, and keep a hand in the business.

From Dan Weiss, Consultant in Publishing, Media and Technology: “Elise Howard's eye for great writers and ideas, coupled with her keen marketing sense and her wide experience of both old and new media, make her a uniquely talented and far-sighted executive.”
