“I like connecting with writers in person, hearing their process
and perspectives… I also like the hands-on approach to craft.” — Stacey Barney |
Krista Vitola Editing Background, continued
I researched other outlets I could write for and came across Carol Fitzgerald’s network of websites. The following summer, I interned with teenreads.com and kidsreads.com and wrote book reviews. It was the opposite of my experience the prior summer, and I loved following Carol all over the city as she spoke about publishing and books and this whole other world I had no idea existed. I mean, I read all the time as a girl, I loved to read, but I had no idea there was such a team of people behind the finished product. I assumed said author wrote his or her book and then it was bound into a printed volume and distributed.
The knowledge that a publishing house bought the book and then an editor worked closely with the author, and then it was publicized and marketed... I was eager to learn all I could about this publishing world. And I did. The following summer I applied to both adult and children’s imprints and was offered a job at both Random House Children’s Books and St. Martin’s Press.
It was a hard decision, but I knew the books that changed my life were the ones I read when I was in elementary school, and I felt certain that within children’s books was where I needed to be.
